In today’s review, we’ll focus on the Worcester Bosch 29CDi Classic Combi boiler. Here you’ll find all of the information you need, to decide whether it’s the right boiler for you.

First, let’s introduce you to Worcester Bosch, the leading boiler manufacturer in the UK. The company has been going since 1962 and has grown to become one of the largest companies in Europe, competing against the likes of the German manufacturer, Vaillant. Will the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 29CDi be suitable for my home?

The Worcester Bosch Greenstar 29CDi Classic Combi is best suited to a medium terraced house or semi-detached house with around 3 large bedrooms. It is capable of supplying hot water to more than one bathroom and has a flow rate of 11 l/min. It’s always a good idea to count your radiators before buying a boiler. The Worcester 29CDi Classic has a central heating output of 30kW and has been designed to comfortably heat between 10 and 15 radiators. We’d always recommend having your mains pressure checked to ensure it is powerful enough to handle a combination boiler.

If you have a smaller home, with just one bathroom, you may want to look at the Worcester Greenstar 25i combi boiler instead. This has a slightly lower central heating output of 24kW and a flow rate of 9 l/min.

The Worcester Bosch Greenstar CDi Classic Combi boiler is also available with higher flow rates, which may be suited to those with large, busy family homes. For instance, the 34CDi Classic has an excellent flow rate of 15 l/min for those who need that extra bit of hot water.

If you want to compare the 29cdi Classic Combi with another brand, we recommend looking at the Vaillant ecoTec Pro 30 combi boiler. This matches the Worcester 29CDi boiler in output but has a slightly faster flow rate of 12.3 l/min.

Worcester 29CDi Classic Combi controls

The Greenstar 29CDi Classic has basic boiler controls with a clear temperature display. Along with being able to increase or reduce heat, you can use them to set various modes, such as ‘holiday mode,’ which will turn your central heating off, ‘pre-heat mode,’ which will heat water up ready for you, and ‘eco mode’ to save energy.

All boilers must now comply with the Boiler Plus regulations, which came into force back in April 2018. The regulations stipulate the minimum energy efficiency all boilers must have and require them to have both time and temperature controls in working order.

Combination boilers like the Worcester Greenstar 29CDi Classic must also have at least one of these four additional features:

Weather compensation: The temperature of the water from the boiler can be changed, based on the temperature outside

Load compensation: The temperature of the water flowing from the boiler can be changed, based on the temperature of the room

Smart control: Compatibility with a smart app or device that can automate the boiler’s processes and increase its efficiency

Passive Flue Gas Heat Recovery Device: The ability to channel flue gas, which would have otherwise been wasted, to use it to heat water

To ensure the Worcester 29CDi boiler is compliant with Boiler Plus, we recommend linking it with a digital or smart controller. One option is the Greenstar Comfort Twin Channel Programmer. This lets you choose different time programmes for your heating and hot water, so you can vary it from one day to the next. Another option is the Bosch EasyControl, which is a smart thermostat that you can link to your phone. This will give you greater control over your boiler, allowing you to pre-heat rooms, turn off the heating in unused bedrooms and check your energy usage from any location.

There are also some fantastic smart thermostats from other brands, which are fully compatible with the 29CDi classic. Two popular models, you’re likely to have seen before, are the Hive and Nest. Both smart thermostats use smartphone apps to offer greater control over your heating system, from any location.

Greenstar 29CDi Classic Size

Unfortunately, the Worcester 29CDi is a little on the large size, measuring a hefty 760mm x 440mm x 360mm. This means it’s going to be too big for an average size kitchen cupboard.

If space is a premium and you need something a little more slimline, perhaps take a look at the Worcester Bosch CDi Compact range. These boilers are designed to fit in standard kitchen cupboards but aren’t quite as powerful. The Greenstar 32CDi Compact only has an output of 24kW, so if you’ve got closer to 15 radiators, it may struggle. The flow rate is also slightly lower at 10 l/min.

Verdict – Is the Worcester Bosch 29CDi Classic Combi the right boiler for you?

If you are looking for a highly efficient, powerful boiler able to heat 10-15 radiators, that is a three bedroom house with up to two bathrooms, the Worcester Bosch 29CDi is a strong contender. With a 30kW central heating output, it will certainly meet your needs, and whilst the flow rate isn’t the fastest on the market at 11 l/min, it’s still more than sufficient.

The size of the Worcester 29CDi Classic lets it down a little but you have to ask yourself, whether it’s power you’re after or whether a compact design is a must?
