How To Balance Your Radiators

Different rooms in your home should have the same temperature.

If they don’t, it could mean your radiators need balancing.

This means adjusting the lockshield valves on each radiator to evenly distribute hot water.

Afterwards, regardless of each radiator’s distance from the boiler, they should all be the same temperature.

Signs your radiators need balancing

The following are clear indicators that your heating system is out of balance:

  • Radiators closest to the boiler get very hot while the radiators furthest away stay lukewarm.
  • Some rooms are always colder than others despite your central heating running for hours.
  • Distant radiators take a long time to heat up compared to those near your boiler.

Balancing vs bleeding: Which do you need?

Many homeowners confuse balancing with bleeding. However, each is a solution to a different issue.

Balancing is for when some of your home’s radiators heat up fine whilst others are only lukewarm or cold. This often means your system has an uneven distribution of hot water.

And bleeding your radiator is for when it’s cold at the top but warm at the bottom. It’s usually caused by trapped air in the system, which you can resolve yourself.

If your radiator is cold at the bottom but warm at the top, the cause is likely a build-up of metallic sludge. Balancing will not fix this. You will need a heating engineer to carry out a power flush.

Tools for balancing radiators

To balance your radiators, you only need a few simple tools.

First, get an adjustable spanner or a lockshield valve adjuster to turn the metal spindle. 

Next, keep a radiator bleed key handy to release any trapped air before you begin. 

You will also need a digital thermometer. This is for measuring pipe temperatures, though you can balance the system by hand if you do not own one. 

Finally, have a phone or notepad ready to write down your readings.

How to balance radiators: Step-by-step

Step 1: Bleed your radiators

Turn your heating off and let the system cool down. Make sure all your radiators are completely cold before you proceed. 

Step 2: Use your radiator key

Use your radiator bleed key to bleed every radiator in your home to ensure there is no trapped air inside.

Step 3: Open all radiator valves

Go to every radiator and open both valves fully by turning them anti-clockwise. Turn your manual or thermostatic radiator valves to their maximum setting. 

Then, remove the plastic cap from the lockshield valve on the opposite side of each radiator. And use your adjustable spanner to turn the metal spindle anti-clockwise until it stops.

Step 4: Map the heating sequence

Turn your boiler back on. Walk through your home and note down the exact order in which each radiator heats up. 

The radiators closest to the boiler should heat up first, while the furthest will be the last.

Step 5: Shut off the heating and let it cool again

Turn your central heating back off and wait for all the radiators to cool down completely. 

Once they are cold, turn the heating back on to begin the balancing adjustments.

Step 6: Adjust the first radiator

Go to the radiator that heated up first on your list (closest to the boiler). Turn the lockshield valve clockwise until it is completely closed. 

Then, open it anti-clockwise by just a fraction of a turn—usually about a quarter-turn.

Step 7: Measure the temperature difference

Wait for the radiator to heat up. Clip or hold your digital thermometer against the metal pipework on the manual/TRV valve side to measure the flow temperature. 

Then, measure the return temperature on the pipework at the lockshield valve side. 

Open or close the lockshield valve until the temperature difference between the two sides is approximately 12°C.

Step 8: Balance the remaining radiators

Move to the next radiator on your list and repeat the process.

Because each radiator is further from the boiler, you will need to open the lockshield valves slightly more than the previous one. 

The final radiator on your list (furthest from the boiler) should have its lockshield valve opened completely.

How to balance radiators with TRVs

Many modern heating systems use thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) to control individual room temperatures. But you still need to balance your system if you have TRVs.

TRVs and balancing serve completely different functions. While a TRV controls the air temperature of an individual room, balancing ensures an equal distribution of hot water to all radiators. 

Without a balanced system, some TRVs will not receive enough hot water flow to heat their rooms.

When balancing radiators with TRVs, set all your TRVs to their maximum setting before you begin the process. 

This prevents the valves from shutting down and restricting water flow while you are taking measurements. 

Once balancing is complete via the lockshield valves, you can turn your TRVs back to your preferred room temperatures.

How to balance radiators without a thermometer

If you don’t own a digital thermometer, you can still balance your system using a simple workaround.

Turn your heating on and work from the radiator nearest the boiler outward. 

For each radiator, close the lockshield valve fully. Then, open it slowly until the radiator feels uniformly warm from top to bottom.

You should be able to hold your hand on both the inlet and outlet pipes, but the flow pipe should feel noticeably warmer. 

While this hand-check method is less precise than using a digital thermometer, it provides a very effective rough balance.

Balancing radiator timeframes

It should take between 2 and 4 hours to balance radiators in an average three-bedroom home (which usually has between 8 – 10 radiators).

Larger homes with multiple zones or extensive pipework can take longer.

This is ultimately  the same timeframe whether it’s DIY or done by a plumber or a heating engineer.

A large proportion of this time comes down to waiting for the system to cool down completely between steps to be able to get accurate temperature readings.

The rest is down to having to walk around noting down the exact order in which the radiators warm up from the boiler outward.

You (or a heating engineer) must then visit sequentially to adjust the lockshield valves of each of them before going back and forth to make further tweaks.

Does balancing radiators save money?

Balancing your radiators is a highly cost-effective way to boost your heating efficiency:

  • If you do it yourself: The process is completely free beyond the small cost of a digital thermometer, which usually costs around £10 to £15.
  • If you hire a professional: A qualified heating engineer will typically charge between £80 and £200 depending on the size of your system.

The energy saving

A balanced system ensures your boiler does not have to run continuously to heat distant, cold rooms. 

This lowers your gas use. However, the saving is modest compared to upgrading to a new boiler or lowering your system’s flow temperature.

When balancing won’t fix the problem

If your radiators are cold at the bottom, your system is likely choked with metallic sludge.

Balancing will not solve this issue. Instead, you need a professional power flush to clear the system.

Similarly, if your radiators are completely cold all over, the issue could be down to low boiler pressure or a faulty circulation pump.
