Changing a Fuse in a Plug (Step-by-Step)

Has your electrical appliance stopped working?

The fuse in its plug might have blown.

Fortunately, changing fuses in a plug is simple.

Signs of a blown fuse in a plug

If your appliance suddenly stops working, but no lights and other appliances nearby have, examine it for scorch marks and burning.

If neither sign is present, it could indicate a blown fuse.

You now have four choices:

  • Return the appliance to where you brought it from (if you have a warranty)
  • Throw it away
  • Call an electrician
  • Replace the plug’s fuse yourself.

(If signs of scorch marks and burning are present, it could be a sign of other issues with the plug, or a circuit is tripping in your consumer unit or a fuse in your fuse box has blown.)

Replacing the plug’s fuse yourself

1. Unplug and examine the appliance

Unplug the appliance and move it somewhere with good lighting. Look closely for signs of burning or scorching.

If you see them, it’s a sign of arcing (a type of dangerous electrical discharge) or another serious fault. In this case, do not proceed with the following steps.

2. Remove the screws

If the plug is in good condition, remove the screw under the base using a screwdriver. It will turn counterclockwise.

3. Dislodge the old fuse

Lift the fuse with your screwdriver to dislodge it.

4. Insert the new fuse

Replace the fuse with a fuse of the same amperage. Check the old fuse or the appliance’s instructions if you’re unsure.

The most common amperages for UK appliances are 3A (for appliances under 700W) and 13A (for high-powered appliances).

5. Reassemble the plug

Reassemble the plug by replacing its cover and screwing in the screw (clockwise, this time).

6. Check the appliance turns on

Plug it into the wall, and switch the device back on.

If a blown fuse was the problem, your appliance should now work again.

Just make sure to follow our appliance maintenance tips in the future to reduce the need to fix it again soon!

Internal fuses in appliances

Unfortunately, some devices (like ovens) also have internal fuses (in addition to plug fuses). These aren’t nearly as easy to locate and fix.

To replace these, you will need a qualified electrician.
