How to repressurise your boiler
Boilers can feel like a mystery to most of us.
Like driving a car, you probably only think about how it works when it stops.
One common boiler problem is low or high pressure. Fortunately, it’s often cheap and easy to fix.
You can usually repressurise your boiler yourself in a few minutes without any professional assistance.
This step-by-step DIY guide will show you how to diagnose and fix this issue.
What boiler pressure means exactly
Water is essentially the vehicle for heat in your central heating system. It carries heat from the boiler to your radiators and taps.
Modern heating systems are closed loops. This means the same water recirculates constantly through your pipes.
As water heats up, it expands (a principle known as thermal expansion).
In an old heating system, expanding water simply pushed up into a tank in the loft. Modern unvented systems do not have a loft tank.
Instead, they use a small steel dome containing a rubber membrane, known as an internal or external expansion vessel.
On one side of the membrane is system water. On the other side is compressed air.
When water heats up and expands, it pushes against this rubber membrane, safely compressing the air to absorb the extra volume.
And when the heating cools down, the air pushes the water back. This process maintains a steady operating pressure.
Checking your pressure display
There are two main types of boiler displays:
- Modern boilers use a digital display on an LCD screen, usually showing the pressure in a bar form.
- Older models use a physical hydraulic dial with a needle
When your heating is switched off and cold, the pressure needle or digital reading should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar. This is the green safe zone on most gauges.
When your heating is turned on and running, the water expands. This causes the pressure to rise naturally to between 1.5 and 2 bar. This temporary rise is completely normal.
However, if your pressure drops below 1 bar when cold, or spikes above 2 bar, your system is out of balance.
Why your boiler might be losing pressure
If your gauge drops below 1 bar cold, your boiler is under-pressurised.
Many modern boilers will display a low pressure error code (such as F1 on an Ideal boiler or F.22 on a Vaillant) and shut down completely. This lockout protects the heat exchanger from overheating.
Before you top up the water, you need to understand why the pressure dropped. There are two primary reasons why water pressure drops.
- A recent radiator bleed. When you bleed a radiator to release trapped air, you also let out water, which naturally lowers the system pressure.
- A water leak. If your boiler pressure drops weekly or monthly, a leak is almost certainly the culprit. Even a tiny, continuous drip from a valve or joint can cause a steady pressure drop.
How to repressurise a boiler yourself
Before attempting to repressurise your boiler, always consult your manufacturer’s user manual. This ensures you are permitted to top up your specific model.
Most modern boilers can be safely topped up by the homeowner using one of two common methods.
1. Repressurise with an external filling loop
An external filling loop is a silver, flexible braided hose located underneath your boiler casing. It connects your mains cold water supply pipe directly to your central heating return pipe. It features one or two small black plastic taps.
If your pressure is too low, follow these 7 simple steps to top it up:
Switch off the boiler
Turn off the electrical power to your boiler and let the system cool down completely. Adding cold mains water to a hot boiler vessel can cause thermal shock and crack your delicate heat exchanger.
Attach the braided hose
If your installer did not leave the flexible loop attached, screw it onto both brass connection valves underneath the boiler. Ensure the compression nuts are hand-tight.
Locate your gauge
Position yourself so you can clearly see the boiler’s pressure gauge while reaching the valves.
Open the valves
Turn both plastic taps on the filling loop. Turn to the open position (parallel to the pipe for lever taps). You should hear the sound of water entering the sealed system.
Watch the gauge rise
Keep a close eye on the pressure gauge as the needle rises. Once the pressure reaches 1.5 bar, proceed immediately to the next step.
Close both valves
Turn both plastic taps back to their original position (90 degrees to the pipework) to stop the water flow. Do not overfill the system past 2 bar.
Disconnect the filling loop
To comply with UK water regulations, you must unscrew and remove the braided hose from at least one of the valves. Keep a dry cloth handy to catch a few minor drips, and store the hose nearby.
2. Repressurise with a Worcester Bosch internal key
If you own a Worcester Bosch combination boiler, your system might use a rigid white plastic key that inserts directly into a manifold underneath the unit.
Follow these 8 steps to repressurise using an internal key:
Switch off the power
Turn the boiler power off and let the unit cool down completely.
Retrieve your filling key
Remove the plastic cover tray underneath the boiler to find your rigid white plastic key.
Insert the key
Push the key up into the slot on the black plastic manifold. Ensure the arrow on the shaft of the key aligns with the open padlock symbol on the manifold.
Lock the key in place
Turn the key clockwise until the arrow points to the closed padlock symbol. The key should feel secure.
Open the filling nut
Locate the small white plastic nut or spindle knob next to the key. Turn this nut anticlockwise to open the cold mains bypass. You will hear water filling the boiler.
Check the gauge
Watch the physical pressure gauge. Once the needle moves out of the red area and settles at 1.5 bar in the green zone, tighten the white nut clockwise to stop the water.
Unlock and remove the key
Turn the white plastic key anticlockwise back to the open padlock position. Gently pull the key downward to remove it.
Mop up any drips
Place a cloth underneath the slot as you remove the key. A few drops of trapped water will escape, which is completely normal. Pop the key back in its tray and restore power to your boiler.
How to repressurise specific boiler brands
The two methods above cover the vast majority of boilers.
However, if you own a Baxi, Ideal, or Vaillant boiler, here is more specific detail on what to expect.
Baxi boilers (200, 400, 600 series)
Baxi 200, 400, and 600 series boilers use the standard external filling loop described in Method 1.
The silver braided hose and its two black lever taps are usually stored in the removable plastic tray underneath the boiler casing.
If your Baxi is displaying a fault code before you begin, the low water pressure code on most Baxi models is E119.
Once you have repressurised the system to 1.5 bar and closed both valves, press and hold the reset button on the front panel until the boiler restarts.
No special tools are required. Follow Method 1 exactly as written.
Ideal boilers (Logic, Logic+, Vogue)
Ideal Logic and Logic+ boilers also use the standard external filling loop. You will find the silver braided hose and its valves at the bottom of the boiler, typically behind a removable plastic fascia panel.
If your Ideal boiler has locked out, it will usually display F1 to indicate low system water pressure. After repressurising to 1.5 bar and closing the filling loop valves, hold the reset button for 3 seconds to clear the fault and restart the boiler.
Again, no special tools are required and follow Method 1 exactly as written.
Vaillant boilers (ecoTEC series)
Many modern Vaillant ecoTEC Pro and Plus boilers don’t use an external braided hose.
Instead, they have a built-in filling tap (a small black lever or rotary valve) on the underside of the boiler, usually the left-hand side.
To repressurise a Vaillant ecoTEC:
- Switch off the boiler and allow the system to cool completely.
- Locate the black filling lever or tap underneath the boiler.
- Turn the lever anticlockwise (or push it to the open position) to allow mains water into the system.
- Watch the pressure gauge. When the needle reaches 1.5 bar, turn the lever clockwise to close it fully.
- Check the gauge is holding steady, then restore power and restart the boiler.
If your Vaillant is displaying F.22, this confirms the boiler has shut down due to low water pressure.
Repressurising as above should clear this fault. However, if it doesn’t, call a Gas Safe engineer.
What if my boiler pressure goes too high?
If you accidentally let too much water into your system during repressurisation, your gauge will spike above 2 bar.
Don’t panic!
Operating a boiler with pressure too high can strain internal seals. But it’s often an easy fix without calling a plumber.
How to reduce boiler pressure
You can safely lower your boiler pressure in minutes by bleeding your radiators.
- Turn off your central heating and let the radiators cool completely.
- Locate the bleed valve on one of your radiators.
- Insert a radiator key and place a towel or bucket underneath the valve.
- Turn the key anticlockwise slowly. Air will hiss out, followed by a steady stream of water. Let a small cup of water escape.
- Recheck your boiler gauge. If the pressure has not dropped back into the 1 to 1.5 bar range, repeat the process on another radiator.
- Once the gauge reads 1.5 bar, tighten the bleed valves closed with your radiator key.
When to call a Gas Safe registered engineer
While a homeowner can easily top up or bleed a heating system, internal boiler repairs require a certified professional.
If your boiler is consistently losing pressure despite regular top-ups, you have a more serious problem.
Ruptured expansion vessels and leaking relief valves
If your system’s expansion vessel fails, your boiler has no space to absorb hot water expansion. When you turn your heating on, the water expands rapidly, causing the system pressure to spike past 3 bar.
To keep your home safe, your boiler is fitted with a pressure relief valve (PRV). This safety valve opens automatically when pressure exceeds 3 bar, safely dumping the excess hot water outside your home through a small 15mm copper pipe.
Once the heating cools down, the water contracts. Because the PRV dumped water, your cold system pressure drops to zero.
To check if your expansion vessel has failed, locate the Schrader valve on the dome and gently press the brass pin inside.
(If your boiler has an internal expansion vessel, the Schrader valve won’t be accessible without opening the casing. In that case, skip this check and call an engineer.)
If water squirts out instead of air, the internal membrane has split and requires replacement. Alternatively, inspect your outdoor relief pipework.
Placing a tray or cup under this 15mm copper pipe will let you see if the safety valve is dripping water when the heating gets hot.
Never attempt to open your boiler casing or repair internal components like the PRV, automatic air vents, or internal expansion vessels yourself.
