Vaillant ecoFit Pure 830 Combi Boiler – Review

Vaillant’s attention to detail with their energy products continues with the popular Vaillant ecoFIT Pure 830. With high-quality German engineering at the heart of Vaillant’s ecoFIT Pure products, the 830 is a popular choice for small to medium-sized properties. Founded in Germany in 1874, Vaillant is the second largest energy goods manufacturer in Europe, while competing against UK-based, Worcester Bosch.

In today’s review, we focus on the Vaillant ecoFIT Pure 830 combination boiler.

Will the Vaillant ecoFIT Pure 830 be suitable for my home?

The ecoFIT Pure 830 combi is suitable for homes and flats with up to three bedrooms and one bathroom with either one non-electric shower or one bath. It’s important to note that the number of radiators installed in your home will determine which boiler your property requires for a sufficient hot water supply. In the case of the ecoFit Pure 830, you’ll have enough output to heat up to 15 radiators. It offers a central heating output of 26.5kW and hot water output of 30kW, which is the ideal fit for small to mid-sized homes. It’s important for homes to have efficient water flow, especially for showers. You probably agree that there’s nothing more annoying than a weak shower in the morning. With the ecoFIT Pure 830, you’ll benefit from a steady flow rate at 12.4l/m. However, to ensure a combination boiler is suitable for your home, it’s essential to check that your mains water pressure is powerful enough. Don’t worry, although it sounds very technical, measuring your water pressure is easy, and whoever installs your boiler will take care of that.

An alternative that’s suitable for up to 15 radiators is the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30i, albeit at the expense of space as it’s bulkier. If you need a slimmer boiler, we’d recommend you opt for the WB Greenstar 30Si.

For homes with up to 10 radiators, the ecoFit Pure 830 is simply too powerful and a waste of your hard-earned cash. The ecoFit Pure 825, in turn, is a better fit due to its lower flow rate. If you’re after a more powerful boiler, the ecoFit Pure 835 is the largest of the ecoFit Pure range and is able to heat up to 20 radiators.

Vaillant combi boiler controls

The ecoFIT Pure 830’s control panel offers a standard set of controls that you’d typically expect from a combi boiler. The control panel includes a few buttons to control the output and temperature of the boiler, as well as the ability to switch the boiler on or off. You’ll also benefit from a small display on the boiler, which will show any error codes should the boiler run into trouble, as well as the current running temperature of the hot water. Vaillant has made quite a few improvements in the design of their boilers over the last years. They’re now built to last longer, and engineers will have an easier job of solving a problem should a part or component need replacing, which will bring maintenance costs down.

Due to the introduction of Boiler Plus, all gas boilers require time and temperature controls to be installed as part of your central heating system, which means that your old mechanical thermostat is no longer compliant. The aim of Boiler Plus is to improve the energy efficiency of homes nationwide by installing high energy-efficiency rated boilers with the appropriate controls.

Boiler Plus puts higher requirements on owners of combi boilers such as the ecoFit Pure 830. Specifically, four additional requirements will need to be met. These are as follows:

  • Weather compensation – The ability to alter the water temperature from the boiler based on outdoor temperatures.
  • Load compensation – The ability to alter the water temperature from the boiler based on the current room temperature.
  • Smart control – A type of control that provides automation and optimisation for your boiler.
  • PFGHRD (Passive Flue Gas Heat Recovery Device)

In addition to boilers, Vaillant also offers a wide selection of programmable and smart thermostats. With programmable (also known as digital) thermostats, you can set temperatures and schedules 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, this functionality varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Smart thermostats overcome these limitations and offer total control from your smartphone or tablet within an app, as well as an abundance of other features to monitor your energy use and control when your heating is switched on or off.

Size

The Vaillant ecoFIT Pure 830 is smaller than the average combi at 700 x 390 x 295mm, which is great for installations within a kitchen cupboard if space comes at a premium. Worcester Bosch also offers their own range of compact combi boilers, and the best alternative to the Vaillant 830 is the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30Si Compact.

Vaillant ecoFIT warranty

For peace of mind, each Vaillant boiler within the ecoFIT range comes with a standard 5-year warranty. If you’re the kind of person that prefers that extra level of peace of mind, extended warranty of up to 10 years are also available. All you have to do is find an engineer that is a Vaillant Advanced Installer. We’re able to give 5-year warranties, absolutely free of charge, with every Vaillant boiler we install, which can be extended to 10 years.

Energy Efficiency

The ecoFIT Pure 830 is highly efficient and certainly lives up to its “eco” name. With an outstanding ErP (Energy-related Products) rating of 94%, which is an A-grade for efficiency, you’ll start seeing a saving on your energy bills relatively soon.

The EU introduced the ErP directive and has been testing energy products (including boilers) before they’re available for purchase since September 2015. Each boiler has to pass specific criteria for efficiency, performance and build quality. If an energy product fails any test, the directive steps in and recommends a list of improvements before the product can be launched.

Verdict – Is this Vaillant boiler the one for you?

To conclude our review of the Vaillant ecoFIT Pure 830, the boiler’s efficiency and top-notch build quality make it a must-have boiler purchase for homeowners. It’s clear that Vaillant has paid a lot of attention to detail when it comes to the ecoFIT Pure boiler range. If you’re looking to replace your old combi boiler, or maybe even your old open vent boiler, then look no further, the 830 is an excellent choice. In addition to high energy efficiency, it is also one of the most quiet boilers on the market, a feat for which the ecoFIT Pure boiler range has been awarded the QuietMark Award for reduced-noise design.
