Why is my radiator cold at the bottom and how do I fix it?

If your radiators are cold at the bottom, your home will be colder and your bills higher.

However, this can usually be fixed in one of two main ways by a professional: A chemical or a power flush.

Why your radiator is cold at the bottom

Sludge is almost always the cause of radiators being hot at the top but cold at the bottom.

To be more specific, this sludge is a mixture of rust, dirt, and metallic debris. It all builds up inside your heating system over time as water corrodes the metal inside your pipes and radiators.

Its weight ensures it settles at the bottom of your radiators, where it restricts hot water flow and leaves the base of the radiator cold.

Trapped air vs sludge

It helps to understand the difference between trapped air and sludge when troubleshooting.

If your radiator is cold at the top but hot at the bottom, you have trapped air. This is a simple issue that you can easily resolve yourself by bleeding the radiator. 

However, if your radiator is hot at the top but cold at the bottom, you have sludge. This is a more complex blockage that requires professional clearing.

Uneven radiators speeds

It’s also worth noting that if you notice that some radiators in your home heat up much slower than others, your radiators may need balancing. 

This is a separate process that ensures your boiler distributes hot water evenly to every room.

Before you call an engineer: Simple checks first

Before calling an engineer, try ruling out other potential causes of your radiator’s cold spots.

Thermostatic radiator valve (TRV)

The valve on the side of the radiator controls flow. If it’s stuck, or set to zero, the radiator won’t heat up. Try turning it up and giving it time to respond.

Lockshield valve

This is the capped valve on the opposite side. It should be open.

If it’s been accidentally closed (after decorating, for example), open it by removing the cap and turning the spindle anti-clockwise.

New radiator

If the radiator was recently installed, sludge isn’t the cause. Try bleeding it first to clear any airlock from installation, then check both valves are fully open.

None of the above?

If none of these apply, sludge is the likely cause and you’ll need a professional flush.

Fixing a radiator that’s cold at the bottom

You cannot fix a sludge blockage by bleeding or balancing your radiators.

A heating engineer must clear the system, which will typically be done in one of the following two ways:

1. A powerflush

A powerflush is a cleaning method that removes sludge from your entire pipework and radiator system. 

It typically takes between 6 – 10 hours, depending on the size of your heating system.

It typically costs £300–£700 for most UK homes. The final figure depends on the number of radiators and how badly the system is contaminated (more than one flush might be needed).

2. A chemical flush

A chemical flush is a basic alternative to a powerflush that does not require a high-pressure pump.

An engineer will simply pour cleaning chemicals into your system and let them circulate naturally before draining the dirty water.

This method is best if you only have cold spots in one or two radiators, or if you need to tackle minor sludge build-up after a recent powerflush.

It’s also cheaper than a powerflush, at £75–£250. (However, this is of course assuming it is the right solution – it can’t replace a power flush if the sludge build up is too large.)

How to prevent radiator sludge

Once your system is clean, you should take steps to stop sludge from building up again.

You can protect your central heating system by using two highly effective preventative measures:

Add chemical inhibitor

An engineer can add this protective liquid to your system. It coats the metal interiors of your pipes and radiators to prevent rust and limescale from forming.

Install a magnetic boiler filter

A magnetic filter sits on your return pipework. It uses a strong magnet to capture any metal debris and rust before it can settle at the bottom of your radiators.
